On February 24, 2022, the 21st-century world witnessed the start of the first major land war in Europe in over 75 years. New generations were re-introduced to the horror and tragedy of war and confronted by fears dormant for over 30 years. Through the centuries, biblical scholars and theologians have debated the issue of war. So how are Christians to understand the state of the modern world? Do we take an extreme pacifist position and point to the 6th Commandment? Or conclude that, in this sinful world, there are times when it is morally just to use deadly force against another?
The Bible makes it clear that every person is a mixture of both noble and ignoble impulses; we can choose right and good but are also susceptible to evil and temptation. We only need to look at Russian aggression against Ukraine to see that evil does exist. But doesn’t Almighty God have the power to intervene in all this horrific violence and tragedy?
